Renovating a three story house proved to be more work than I originally thought it would be. If you grow and bale hay or if you buy a lot of hay for your horses, cows, or other livestock, you probably have to move hay bales around from time to time. After all, you might need to move them to your hay storage shelter, or you may need to transport them to your pastures or horse barns. When moving hay around, you need the right equipment for the job; after all, hay bales can be very heavy and difficult to work with. A skid steer can be very useful for moving hay bales, but you will probably want to follow the three tips below.
1. Buy the Right Attachment
First of all, without the right attachment for your skid steer, it will be difficult or impossible for you to move hay bales. Luckily, you can purchase skid steer attachments of various types. A bale spear is actually perfect for moving hay bales around. Make sure to purchase a good-quality attachment that will fit your specific make and model of skid steer. Also, while you're shopping, you may want to check out some of the other attachments that are available for your skid steer and that might be helpful on your property, such as brush cutters, snow removal equipment, trench diggers and more.
2. Be Mindful of Weight Limits
As you probably already know, hay bales can be very heavy. This is particularly true with larger round bales. It is important to be mindful of any weight limits that might be in place for your skid steer; otherwise, you could damage the skid steer or drop a hay bale while moving it. Many heavier, larger skid steers are more than capable of handling the weight of a hay bale, but it doesn't hurt to make sure. Just check out the weight limits that might be listed in the manufacturer's instructions for your skid steer, or contact your dealer or the customer service phone number for your skid steer manufacturer if you aren't sure.
3. Follow Basic Safety Rules
When working with a skid steer or any piece of heavy equipment, it is important to follow basic safety rules. After all, someone could get hurt if you don't operate the skid steer properly or if you drop a large, heavy hay bale. Always pay attention to what you are doing and be careful when moving hay bales or otherwise using your skid steer.
